On Wednesday, October 12th Chris Shelton and Catherine Garrett from All About Animals held a TNR training class for local residents of Macomb County. The class was conducted in the Education Room at the Humane Society of Macomb. Local residents were welcomed by Ken Kempkens, current Interim Director and two members of his staff.
TNR (Trap Neuter Release) is an effective means of dealing with the overpopulation of ferile cats in the community. The 10 or more people that attended learned the proper techniques for trapping the cats, transferring them to All About Animals for spaying or neutering, and how to safely release the cats back to their communities. A briefing on best methods for providing shelter against the elements was provided as well during the TNR class.
Kempkens shared the alliance between the Humane Society of Macomb Foundation and All About Animals in the form of a substantial grant to assist lower income people and provide them with valuable TNR services for free. He further stated that they will have free straw available in November for outside animals. The Humane Society of Macomb will also purchase traps in the near future that can be checked out by local residents for a deposit fee.
Here at the Humane Society of Macomb we plan to continue to use our Education Room to assist the community, help them learn methods for this TNR process, and provide other information that may be beneficial to the community.
