Most people are loving pet owners, but are you a responsible pet as well? There are lots of characteristics that make a person a responsible owner and in honor of Responsible Dog Ownership Month, we put together our list of what makes a responsible pet owner.
The first step to being a responsible pet owner is planning BEFORE you get a pet. Make sure that your lifestyle can handle a pet. For example, if you travel a lot, you might not have time to train your pet or to take care of them as well as you’d like.
Another thing to do before getting a pet is to pet-proof your house. Similar to baby proofing, make sure that all valuables are moved to an out of the way location such as a higher shelf or placed in a cupboard. This will prevent your pet from accidentally knocking it over or playing with it like a toy.
Make sure you provide for your pet. This means that you take care of their physical and emotional needs. Spend time playing with them and giving them attention. Always make sure that they have enough food, water, and are taken out for walks and bathroom breaks. Additionally, know where your pet is at all times. Consider microchipping your pet in case they are lost, and keep tags up to date. Visit our microchipping blog for more information.
Keep track of your pet’s health. If your pet looks sick, it’s better to take them to the vet than take the chance and have your pet become sicker. Be sure to also vaccinate your pets and know of any medications they need. Check out our vaccination recommendations blog for pets.
Realize that owning a pet is a lifetime decision and commitment. You’re promising to take care of someone else. That means making sure you have the time, desire and love that your furever friend needs.
If you follow the guidelines above, you’re well on your way to being a responsible pet owner.
