With K9 Veterans Day on March 13, we thought we’d write a post about your furry friends and all they have done to serve this country.
Dogs have been serving in the military for quite some time. In honor of these courageous pups, we decided to write a blog honoring some famous military dogs, and the services they can do.
Here are some of the earliest and most well known military pups:
- Sergeant Stubby the Bulldog mix: Stubby served in World War One and was promoted through the ranks to Sergeant. He worked in France for over 18 months and had the ability to detect arriving artillery shells. After the War, he was honored in several parades.
- Chips the Collie-German Shepherd-Siberian Husky mix: Chips served in World War Two and he helped to capture 10 enemy troops. He became the most decorated war dog. After the War, he returned to live in New York.
- Smoky the Yorkshire Terrier: Smoky was originally from New Guinea and also served in World War Two. Smoky’s most famous adventure was carrying a telephone wire so that his human comrades wouldn’t be put in danger. During the War, Smoky entertained troops through self-taught tricks.
Why do dogs do so great in the military? They have a keen sense of both hear and smell. Their sense of hearing allows them to discover when weapons are approaching. Their sense of smell allows them to sniff out enemies and drugs. They are also trained to attack any potential enemies.
Hopefully this has given you a better insight into what dogs do for the United States military.
