Even though chocolate is dangerous, you want your pets to enjoy Halloween too. Luckily, we’re here to help. Listed below are some of our favorite pet healthy Halloween treats and the recipes to make them.
Pumpkin Dog Biscuits
The Ingredients:
- 1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup white flour
- 1/2 cup water + 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons dry milk
- 1/3 cup corn meal
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 cup oats
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
The Procedure:
- Mix all the ingredients together to a thick consistency.
- Then roll it out about a quarter-inch thick on a cooking sheet.
- Cut the dough into two-inch long strips and arrange them on a cooking sheet.
- Then bake for one hour at 350.
- For extra crunch, turn off the oven and allow the biscuits to sit over night (out of paw’s reach).
Microwave Doggie Donuts
The Ingredients:
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup beef broth or chicken broth
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 3 tablespoons quick cooking oats
The Procedure:
- Grease a shallow, microwave-safe plate or baking dish. Set aside.
- Whisk together the egg and broth in a large bowl.
- Gradually stir in the flour and oats.
- Turn dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to 1/2 inch thickness.
- Cut out cookies using a round cookie cutter.
- Use a smaller round cookie cutter to cut out the center hole.
- Place on prepared plate, arranging the cookies on the dish without crowding them.
- Cover with a paper towel, and cook in the microwave on high until firm, about 10 minutes.
- Repeat steps to use up the remaining dough.
- Cool on a wire rack.
Peanut Butter Cupcakes
The Ingredients:
- ½ cup brown rice flour (or whole wheat flour or rye flour)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ⅓ cup organic canola oil
- ⅓ cup organic applesauce
- 1 organic, pastured egg
- 2 tablespoons organic honey
- 3 tablespoons organic plain Greek yogurt
- 1½ tablespoons organic peanut butter
The Procedure:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- In a mixing bowl, stir the flour, baking powder, canola oil, applesauce, egg, and honey until well combined.
- Insert cupcake liners into a muffin or cupcake pan. Spoon mixture into cupcake liners, filling each about halfway.
- Bake for about 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
- Allow cupcakes to cool to room temperature.
- Meanwhile, in a bowl, stir yogurt and peanut butter until mixture is smooth and creamy. Use a small spatula or butter knife to smooth a thin layer of the peanut butter frosting over each cupcake.
