On Saturday, September 24th, the Humane Society of Macomb was happy to host our Grand Re-Opening at our shelter. For the Grand Re-Opening we invited the public to see the improvements we made at the shelter, enjoy games and food, and tour the facility. Many met some of our “furever friends” awaiting adoption.
A few community members even brought their own pets to test the compatibility between their pet and other animals at the shelter. All About Animals and Michigan Pet Fund Alliance were also at the event sharing information. Melissa, the author of our Tails of Hope blog, manned the vet tech table providing information, giving out some catnip and highlighting stories of some of our pets.
For those of you who came out to celebrate our grand re-opening we would like to thank you for coming out and making the event a huge success. But for those of you who couldn’t make it to the event check out some of the recent improvements and changes we have made and these photos from the Grand Re-Opening Event.

Recent Changes & Improvements
It has been a truly rewarding experience to listen to the community and then implement changes based on your feedback and concerns. A few of our internal guidelines have also helped guide and direct these recent changes we have made. Our ultimate goal at the Humane Society of Macomb is to help those who cannot speak for themselves and provide humane care for unwanted, abused, and injured animals. We also seek to prevent cruelty to animals and place adoptable pets into good, permanent homes with responsible owners. Check out the recent changes we have made:
- On Sept. 15, the Humane Society of Macomb won an award from the Michigan Pet Fund Alliance for being being one of the two most-improved limited admission shelters in the state. We have saved 40 percent more dogs and cats in 2015 than in the previous year. To read all about this award visit our Save Rate Award blog.
- New euthanasia policies have been created for the Humane Society of Macomb. All euthanasia of animals has been stopped unless the animals are not responding to medical treatment or cannot be safely put into homes due to an aggressive nature. Counseling is being provided to owners requesting euthanasia to direct them to their vets and provide them with other options.
- With our Updated Comprehensive Adoption Program all of our pets will be spayed or neutered and ensured to have up to date shots, testing, and exams. Furthermore, we are pushing to have all animals microchipped by the end of September.
- We have re-organized the shelter and made significant separation changes. We have separated dogs from cats to help reduce stress. Also, we have separated our adoption area from the lost area because these sections have different emotional needs.
- The cats have received a new area called the cat play room. We have also put down sand for the horses and built new feeders for them as well.
- A new training room with a flat-screen TV has been created for both the staff and public to benefit from.
- New renovations have also been made to the shelter. We have installed new flooring and tiles, painted the walls, increased the size of our dog kennels, and implemented crossovers between the cat cages. Also, the siding and door on the barn has been replaced.
- The shelter has received significant clean up as well. All overgrowth and debris has been cleared from the Humane Society of Macomb grounds using community service volunteers. Outside kennels and fence rails around the shelter have received power-washing.
- Vehicle maintenance and repair has been performed on the company truck, car, and tractor. Also, we purchased a minivan to provide our animals with both a comfortable and safe ride to and from remote adoption events.
- We are working to update our human resources policies and create a new employee handbook to improve employee relations.
Once again, we would like to thank everyone who came out and made this event a huge success for us and the community as a whole. We are proud of the changes we have made within the last year but we also are excited to continually improve moving forward.
