We feel like we’ve been covering a lot of issues related to dogs, so in this post we’re going to switch it up and focus on keeping your cat healthy. There are many different ways to assure your kitty has a long and happy life. Here are our top five ways to make sure your cat has a long and healthy life.
- Claws: While we don’t condone it, the option to declaw your cat is a personal one, and we’re not going to talk about that. However, if you decide not to declaw your kitty, there are ways to avoid them scratching up the house. You can train them to use a certain scratching post, by offering treats when they use it. The post will keep your furniture from getting messed up and keep your cat’s claws from getting too long.
- Dietary Needs: Like humans, different cats have different tastes they dislike and prefer. All cats however need some sort of meat (protein) in their diet, whether this comes from fish or chicken. They also enjoy food more when it is at room temperature, instead of frozen or heated up.
- Vaccination: Cats are susceptible to a number of preventable diseases such as rabies, feline panleukopenia virus, and bordetella bronchiseptica. Your cat can be given vaccines either through drops into their eyes or through injections. However, you should consult with your vet before getting any animal vaccinated.
- Dental Hygiene: Your vet should be checking your cat’s gums and teeth during their appointment, but it’s also up to you to be giving more frequent attention to their dental hygiene. Brush your cat’s teeth regularly and make sure that their gums are pink and teeth are white. If you notice an excessive buildup, plaque, or unusual breath from your cat, it may be time to schedule another appointment.
- Attention: Cats are known for needing less attention than dogs, but that doesn’t mean they never want you around. Let your cat come to you and they’ll let you know when they want to cuddle up or play with their toys. Giving them attention when they want it is an easy and fun way to show them that you care.
We hoped this article gave you some helpful reminders and tips on how to keep your cats healthy and happy.
